The game industry growing so fast, in this situation, lots of people want to be game developers. But, what is the easiest way to be a game developer? What are the best tricks about starting a game developer career? Let's find out!
DECISION PART
Okay, so you want to be a game developer, but what are you going to do? In the beginning, you should decide which part of game development will be your professional area. You can code, design, sound, or art. Some parts also exist besides these, but they are not our case today(like marketing.) You should find what you like to do as a developer. If you're good at math and trying to solve complex things, probably programming is best for you. But still, it can be changed person by person.
If you like to create a world that never existed, maybe level design is good for you. Or, maybe you like to draw something and create 2D visual things, which means you can work on the art part of this job.
Try every one of them, as a beginner. You will like one of them much more than the others. Create a simple project on Unreal Engine 4, Unity, Godot, or whatever game engine you want to use, open a tutorial video, and try them to see which is best for you.
DEVELOP YOURSELF
After you tried all of them or some of them you like, you finally find your place in the game development! But, what are you going to do after that? You must develop your skills, and your experience, which means; you have to practice a lot! Watch every tutorial you can find, buy good courses online, make practice with them. But, there is something that I call a "tutorial dead end".
That means when you get used to it buy a new course, or watch a tutorial and do the same thing. This is not good for your creativity. After some point, you should try your unique thing, and create your own projects. You shouldn't do the same thing that tutors do in the video. Try yourself, try something different, try something you like.
It can be bad at first, but you going to develop yourself this way, believe me. It will be better.
Still, there are other tons of things is exist that help you to develop your skills. You can join the game jams, and maybe you can find a team for yourself. It helps to get used to it and work with other game developers.
Try to contact other indie game developers online! You can join communities on Reddit, you can follow some of the people on Twitter, or you can join discord servers for game developers. Talk with people, learn their learning way, and ask them how they do something that you also do.
BEING AN INDIE OR WORKING IN SOMEWHERE?
While you develop yourself, you will want to earn money at this job at some point. There are tons of ways to do that. You can get a job from video development companies, you can create your own game, or maybe you can sell some assets you've made. This is a really subjective case because situations can differ on where you live, your life, etc.
I cannot give specific tips for that, but all of them have pros and cons.
But I can talk about myself, I'm trying to be an indie game developer, and this is so hard.
Because; I must work on development, also I should figure out how I'm going to sell my game. The worst part of this, is maybe my game will not sell at all, maybe it will sell a few and I'll not gain enough money to live with it. Or maybe I'm going to be a millionaire, this all depends on the person.
But still, you can try them all without taking too many risks, it can be the best tip that I can give to you.
I'll talk about all these topics specifically in my blog, you can check the "Which engine is best for you" article to learn much.
